This is a free, open-access book about designing HR technology and AI systems that hold that coherence: truth before meaning, meaning before intelligence, intelligence before agency, and agency only inside trust.

For twenty years, the limiting factor in every HR transformation was never intelligence. It was coherence: systems that could not agree with themselves about who an employee was, what a job meant, or what the organization still owed anyone.

A note on why this is free, and an invitation.

This book began as material for a graduate management course I was teaching, built for a syllabus, meant for a single semester's cohort. The manuscript lives here, still being finished chapter by chapter. If something here feels wrong, thin, or worth arguing with, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

I built it deliberately using the same principles this book argues for: retrieval before reasoning, grounded answers with visible citations, and an honest "I don't know" when the source material doesn't support a confident answer, rather than the kind of confident guessing Chapter 7 specifically warns against.

It exists partly because a cohort of graduate students I had the privilege of teaching pushed me toward building it, and partly because they were generous enough to be its first real testers, breaking it in useful ways before anyone else saw it in its nascent stages.

This book, this site, and the Ask the Book chat feature within it were conceived and built entirely on my own time, with my own resources, independent of my employment. The work generates no income or business revenue of any kind: it is, and will remain, free. Illustrative examples, scenarios, and case narratives are composite or anonymized; they do not describe real individuals or specific confidential incidents.

Here is what this site collects, plainly.

Site-wide traffic is measured through Cloudflare's cookieless analytics, aggregate numbers only, no individual tracking. The Ask the Book chat feature retains the questions asked and answers given, through the underlying platform's standard logging, so the feature can be monitored and improved. I do not sell this data or use it to build a profile of anyone who visits. The rest of the book remains fully readable without ever touching the chat feature.
